It's almost time, Buffalo.

Bills season is here, and if you're anything like me, you've probably got the schedule on your calendar, your favorite game-day traditions ready to go, and maybe even a few predictions about how the season will unfold.

But there's something else I like to do this time of year: a little financial check-in.

Think of it as getting your financial game plan ready for the season ahead.

You don't need to overhaul your finances completely; sometimes a few small adjustments are all you need to stay on track.

5 Things to Check This Fall

1. Review your beneficiaries.

Have there been any changes in your family or circumstances? Make sure the beneficiaries on your retirement accounts and insurance policies still reflect your wishes.

2. Check your retirement contributions.

Take a look at where you are so far this year. Are you on track with the goals you've set for yourself?

3. Take a look at your cash.

Is your emergency reserve where it should be? Are you keeping more cash than you really need? Your cash position should fit into your overall financial strategy.

4. Look at your spending.

Before we get too far into the fall, take a look at where your money has gone so far this year. Are there any surprises? Has your spending changed?

5. Make your year-end list now.

December has a way of sneaking up on us. If there are financial decisions you've been meaning to make—tax planning, charitable giving, retirement contributions, estate planning or something else—put them on your list now. The same can be said for your holiday spending: review your gift and giving budget now to make sure you're not overbuying at year-end.

You Don't Have to Win Every Play

Financial planning isn't about getting everything perfect.

It's about having a strategy, knowing what you're working toward, and making adjustments when your circumstances change.

So while you're getting ready to cheer on the Bills, take a little time to make sure your own financial game plan is ready for the season ahead.

And as always, if there's something on your financial to-do list you've been putting off, I'm here to help you work through it.

Go Bills!
